The mobile app stems from a dual need: from one hand to make the most of some of the datasets made available in Open Data by the municipality of Palermo; from the other hand to provide a useful tool for all those tourists who decide to explore the beauty of the city of Palermo.
A complete guide at your fingertips and available even offline to discover the most interesting places to visit and move around easily.
Palermo OnTour, in fact, is able to create personalized tourist routes, based on the time you have available, and show them on a map. Each tourist site is characterized by a descriptive card, as well as additional data such as opening hours, ticket prices and contacts.
The algorithm behind the app allows you to create real-time tailor-made tours starting from the available time and the location indicated by the user. Thanks to it only places that will be open to visitors upon arrival will be included, thus avoiding unpleasant surprises. The mechanism can also be further refined by including the means of transport and type of places you want to visit.
Palermo OnTour collected many awards: the app, in fact, won the second prize of ApPalermo, contest sponsored by the municipality of Palermo with the aim of facilitating the access to its Open Data datasets and increasing the information transparency. It has also been awarded with the first prize at the first edition of the Android App Festival Sicilia, held in May 2014 in Santo Stefano di Camastra (ME), and at the Mob App Awards 2014 at SMAU Milan for the category “Travel and Tourism”.
It currently reached 298/1505 downloads and 50 individual reviews. The app has an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 in the Google Play Store.
The use of datasets in an open format allows the app to be declined, quickly and easily, for other cities, by providing an innovative digital guide that can be used even in absence of connectivity.
